Challenges of Recycling Not all plastic waste can be recycled into filament. 3D printing waste (support structures, leftover filament, parts,... ) generally works well. Injection-molding waste however, is very tricky. Regardless of the material type, thorough sorting is always crucial. We recommend contacting our experts to analyze your waste stream.

What material do you want to process?

ABS extrusion tips ABS is generally easy to work with. Because it is an amorphous polymer, it tends to behave quite linearly and predictably over a wide range of temperatures (typically 200-240C). This has one good and one bad consequences.
Upside: when starting to experiment with a new ABS grade, decent or even printable results can often be achieved quickly.
Downside: in order to improve the filament quality from “decent” to “optimal”, exploring the wide thermal window takes time.

Despite being a very common polymer type, it’s important to remember that ABS comes in countless grades (brands, references, colors,...), each being unique. It is worth analyzing or testing your individual grade of ABS.

What is the Melt Flow Index (MFI) of your material grade? The Melt Flow Index (MFI), or Melt Flow Rate (MFR), measures polymer viscosity in g/10min and is often listed on the Technical Data Sheet. In an MFI test, molten plastic's flow through a specific hole over 10 minutes indicates its viscosity; a lower MFI suggests a more viscous polymer, ideal for extrusion.

When do you want your first results?

Preliminary results assessing the compatibility of a material with Filament Making can be achieved within 1 week, thanks to our MFI test.

For a material in the right MFI range, we can typically produce an initial filament sample in 2-3 weeks at 3devo, in case such validation is required for your project approval. This step is optional.

Once we are both confident that the project can succeed, typically when the material MFI is in the right range, we can kickstart your Trial Phase. It is a period of 2 months, guided by us online, and fully refundable if you’re not happy about the results. That is our brand promise.
